Olathe City Council signals support for theme park, arena, entertainment complex

Olathe's Inclusive Entertainment Complex: A Groundbreaking Vision for Accessibility

Olathe, Kansas is set to become the home of a revolutionary entertainment complex that promises to redefine the concept of inclusivity. The proposed development, which features an amusement park, sports arena, and more, is designed to be ultra-accommodating to individuals with special needs, offering a seamless and enjoyable experience for all.

Unlocking the Doors to Inclusive Recreation

Pioneering the "Ultra-Accommodating" Approach

The term "ultra-accommodating" was coined by Gordon Hartman, the creator of Morgan's Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas. This innovative concept has inspired the Olathe project, which aims to provide a truly inclusive environment where individuals with special needs can fully participate in the entertainment experience. James Arkell, an executive with Loretto Holdings and the father of a son with special needs, has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.Arkell's personal experience has shaped his understanding of the challenges faced by families with special-needs children. "We don't have to take Michael out of his chair to put him on these rides. He can just get on. He doesn't have to go into a separate entrance. We don't have to hold on to him for dear life," Arkell described, highlighting the seamless integration that the complex will offer.

Embracing Inclusivity: A Community-Driven Approach

The Olathe City Council has enthusiastically embraced the proposal, recognizing its alignment with the community's values. Councilman Dean Vakas praised the project, stating, "By any standard of measure, individually and in the aggregate, the series of projects is just exceptional in all regards. And we're extremely fortunate to have come to Olathe."Councilwoman Dr. LeEtta Felter echoed this sentiment, noting that the complex's inclusive nature resonates with Olathe's existing embrace of inclusivity. "What you just were speaking about with this district are all the things that Olathe already embraces," she said.

Transforming the Landscape of Accessible Recreation

The proposed entertainment complex will feature a 5,000-seat arena, an 18-acre ultra-accessible amusement park, a 150-room hotel, and 120,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space. The developers are working closely with major hotel chains, including Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt, to ensure that the entire complex is designed with accessibility in mind.Arkell emphasized the collaborative approach, stating, "It's not us trying to convince someone. They are competing to get to be the one to build it." This level of engagement from industry leaders underscores the significance and potential impact of the Olathe project.

Fostering Family Experiences and Community Engagement

The complex's inclusive design extends beyond the physical infrastructure. Arkell shared a personal anecdote that highlighted the importance of creating an environment where families with special-needs children can fully participate in recreational activities."We just spent a week in St. Charles, Missouri, for dance. There were eight of us. All we did was watch dance for four minutes a day and then stimulate the economy," Arkell said, drawing laughter from the audience. This story illustrates the challenges faced by families and the transformative impact that the Olathe complex can have on their lives.Mayor John Bacon, who has personal experience with the complexities of raising a child with special needs, recognized the significance of the project. "Many times the decision is we'll just stay home," he said. "So can you imagine a facility where people are actually excited to see a person roll up in a wheelchair or something like that, and welcome them, and the opportunities like as that family to have complete recreation or a family event? So this is a unique opportunity."The Olathe entertainment complex represents a groundbreaking step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible world, where individuals with special needs can fully participate in the joy of recreation and community engagement. As the project moves forward, it promises to serve as a model for other communities seeking to embrace the principles of inclusivity and provide equal opportunities for all.
